A Hands-on Course in New Zealand

Deposit for
Wanaka, New Zealand

February 19 to March 16   --   2018

4-week hands-on course in handcrafted log home construction.

You will be learning from Robert Chambers, and working side-by-side every day with Robert.

The total tuition is USD $2300.

The deposit is $1000.

The balance of $1300 will be due by or before January 5th.

Class size is strictly limited to 12 people maximum to give you the best attention.  Robert's courses usually fill, so be quick to get your spot!
Two places are already taken-- deposits paid and places reserved.
Additional information will be posted here as it become available.  Registration is now open for this course. You can register here, on this webstore, by paying the deposit above.

If Robert cancels the Course (Robert has not canceled a Course in 25 years), then your deposit is refunded to you in FULL.

If you cancel, then your $1000 deposit is refunded to you ONLY if another student registers to take your place. In other words, if the Course fills (12 students), then you get a refund if you have to cancel.

If you want to pay your deposit by direct credit to my NZ bank account, please let me know and we will arrange that for you. Payment from this page is possible only by credit card or by PayPal.

No previous construction experience is required. No previous chainsaw experience is required. You should expect to do physical work. A reasonable amount of fitness is expected. Past students have been women and men between 17 and 70 years old.

You will work on a small team of 2 or 3 people on each log. There will be a few classroom sessions, but almost all our work days are spent outside scribing and fitting logs, and using hand tools and power tools. We will build a small log cabin shell — like the cabins seen in these photos. One of these photos is a 3D rendering of our actual project.

Safety gear (cutting chaps, eye and ear protection, steel-toe boots) are required. Chainsaws will be available locally for you to rent.

We will work together Monday through Friday each week (we have Saturdays and Sundays off).

Note that this is summer in New Zealand, and summer weather in Wanaka is usually really great.  As you can see from the photo, Wanaka is on a large lake in the Southern Alps mountains. Population is about 6,500 - with lots of restaurants, some fast food, cafes (great coffee), numerous pubs, large supermarket, specialty food stores (organic, gourmet, asian), new medical center. Our work venue is about 1 km south of the medical center. Wine vineyards and olive groves are to the east, and Lake Wanaka & wilderness & glacier-covered mountains are to the west. Lots of great outdoor recreation opportunities. Wanaka is a tourist mecca (a SMALL one) -- and it has fabulous hiking, fishing, mountain-biking, swimming, boating, and more.

If you are flying, then you will land either at Queenstown (ZQN airport code, and a 1.5 hour drive to Wanaka) or you will land at Christchurch (4.5 hours drive --  airport code CHC ). There are coach and van services, and you can book a seat to get you to Wanaka from either of these airports. You cannot fly directly to Wanaka.

If arriving from overseas you can attend this Course with a tourist/holiday visa for New Zealand. You do NOT need a student visa or a work visa to attend. More visa information is available from Robert.

Our Hosts (Tim and Claire) will find a large house where you can share the rent and utilities, and be roommates with other log construction students--space is limited and is first-come first-served. Or you can find your own accommodation—in Wanaka there is 1 hostel, 3 motor-camps, many motels, and hundreds of rental homes.

Camping/tenting is allowed in Wanaka only at one of the 3 established campgrounds/motor camps. One of these is in town. Another is close by (2 km walk from the town center). The farthest campground is about 8 kilometers from our worksite. There is no "freedom" camping/tenting allowed in or near Wanaka (this means no tenting on the lakeshore, at our group-house, or anywhere else).

You are responsible for your meals.

Additional information will be posted here as it become available.
